Insights from VIVA Technology summit in Paris

Last month, I had an opportunity to visit one of the biggest tech summits in Europe — VIVA technology in Paris.

Honestly, I was sceptic as 2 years ago I attended Websummit in Lisbon and — I was quite disenchanted. Full of overhyped so-called startupers and influencers, I felt lost and rolled by buzzwords and bullshit in general. But what I found on VIVA technology was quite the opposite.

Once visiting a summit, I am interested especially in 2 areas — in agrotech (because of our own product — getFarmer) and also in panel discussions regarding economy, future tech, nature-responsible policies and various atypical ideas. As for agrotech, I found there several interesting companies and individuals trying to create high-tech agro products, services but at this stage mostly for B2C customers. A French startup creating “personalised” green houses which can be placed directly at your backdoor and combines hydroponic and classical growing of goods — myfood.eu. Then I found really thrilling a “robotised” flower pot invented by bunch of students from ESIEE PARIS. It is monitored by camera and sensors and managed by AI algorithms to distinguish if soil is humid enough, if plants are healthy and growing steadily… exciting! Of course, there were plenty of other interesting “stop-by” points like Facebook or Google.

As for the speakers and panel discussions, I was quite overwhelmed with names such as Emanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau, Jack Ma, Gary Kasparov etc. I especially enjoyed two of them. The first one was Emeritus Professor Noel Sharkey from the University of Sheffield, who expressed his sensible comments on future of AI, how our biased views create biases for AI decision processes, how “complex automation” became an “artificial intelligence” at some point and much more. All of those topics were rather amusing and enlightening insights not mentioning his stories as a judge for man vs. machine matches (in chess for instance). Another one was Paul Allard from Impak Finance, who called up for reasonable consumption — “causeumerism”, advocated “capital for good” principles and proposed potential future finance ecosystem supporting those principles. What I’m especially happy that fight against hyper-consumerism and nature exploitation is not just another fuzz, but is becoming well addressed problem with proposed leverages and mechanism how to avoid ecological disaster in near future.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog, VIVA Tech summit surprised me in a very positive way. I found it very inspirational and returned home with plenty of new ideas regarding our getfarmer portal. Combining cross domain technologies we aspire to redefine the way how food is produced, distributed and handled. Primary focus is rather clear — to support and boost growing of local and bio products with all the positive outcomes — boosting local economy, lowering carbon footprint and bringing high quality and edible food on our tables.

Digital transformation in logistics and supply chain industry

Our client is one of the biggest suppliers of spare parts for transport vehicles and buses in Slovakia and the only producer of buses in our country. With more than 90k different kinds of commodities in its warehouses and growing operations every year, the point where all the stock movements in, between and out of the warehouses became particularly challenging was reached. It has had certain implications for controlling, reporting processes and in overall transparency of financial and data flows in company.
